God teaches us what is acceptable to Him as worship both through direct commands and through examples of what others did in the Bible. One of the things He tells us is what kind of music He wants for the church.
In the old testament, the children of Israel worshipped God using various musical instruments such as timbrels and harps. King David wrote about such in Psalm 150. When Jesus died on the cross, He nailed the old law that the Israelites followed to the cross and set up a new law for us to follow. (Hebrews 8:7-13, Colossians 2:13-14) The church today is to follow this new law and not the old one. (Galations 5:4) This is why we do not sacrifice animals, burn incense, or use musical instruments today in our worship to God. |
